BUSD Honors Fiestas Primavera

The District thanks Ms. Sheri Leigh and Mario Saucedo for supporting our District and community through the Fiestas Primavera event on March 23, 2024. Ms. Leigh and Mr. Saucedo organized this event as an alternative to the infamous La Migra event students within our community engaged in. Through this event, they facilitated a scholarship essay contest for which Spencer Ball and Marcos Jackson, Benicia High School Students were the winners.

Years of Service Recognitions

On Friday, May 31, 2024, BUSD recognized employees who have made a long-term commitment to our students, District, and community. Forty employees collectively reached the 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, and 35-year milestones in an era of educator shortages and employee turnover.

As we honor the dedication, hard work, and loyalty of our colleagues who have reached significant milestones, we are reminded of the profound impact of their service, passion, and commitment on our organization and community thriving. We  thank them for playing a vital role in our collective success. And understand they make our District special.

Thank You!

Superintendent’s Message

Damon Wright

BUSD Community,

As the 2023-2024 school year sunsets, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to each one of you for your unwavering support and active participation in various District programs. Your volunteer work, advocacy, and financial contributions have been instrumental in our success. Our strong partnership, built on your support, has contributed to a successful school year filled with achievements, growth opportunities, and promise for a successful future.

BUSD volunteers and supporters are the glue that holds our school community together. Whether through sweat equity or fundraising, your support has allowed us to provide an outstanding program level. Thank you for chaperoning field trips, supporting classroom projects, fundraising through PTG and booster activities, the Measure C efforts, and volunteering during extracurricular activities such as athletics and the fine arts. Your involvement has significantly impacted our students’ lives; we are truly grateful!

To our dedicated BUSD Staff, you are the backbone of our success. Your extraordinary commitment to creating a nurturing and stimulating environment for our students has not gone unnoticed. The extra hours you’ve spent developing lessons, grading papers, and researching strategies to improve student outcomes have contributed to learning and growth. We are deeply grateful for your invaluable contribution to our school community. Your work ethic and character are commendable and paramount in successful student outcomes. Each of you plays a crucial role, and we appreciate you and your contributions.

BUSD students, you are the reason why we are here. You have once again exceeded expectations, and we are filled with great excitement and pride as we cheer you on in your journey to the next grade level or chapter in your lives. Your competitive spirit was on display as we watched our Speech and Debate team excel at historical levels, our athletic teams win section championships and advance to the championships, and our Career Technical Education program and our fine and visual arts showcase their brilliance throughout the year. Your diligent work and incremental gains toward continual improvement make us most proud.

On behalf of the Benicia Unified School District, students, staff, and community supporters, we wish you a summer filled with fun and relaxation. You have certainly earned it.  We will see you in August as we launch another outstanding school year, and we are confident that, with your continued support, we will achieve even greater heights. Your contributions, whether big or small, have a profound impact on our school community and students; for that, we are truly grateful.

Benicia High School Art Installation

Ms. Christine Chu and Ms. Tina Silva are committed to campus beautification by highlighting student artwork. Benicia High School students created cultural-themed tiles for the planter and custom tiles that were both structured and broken up. The art pieces were then transferred into beds of mortar for “stepping stones”  and placed in the garden area near the BHS library entrance.

Please enjoy the project photos below.

As required by law, BUSD has a CITIZENS’ BOND OVERSIGHT COMMITTEE (CBOC) to review the BUSD expenditures related to the Measure C School Facility Bond Program. Measure C was approved by the voters in March 2024, and provides funding for school facilities projects. The purpose of the CBOC is to inform the public, review bond expenditures and present an Annual Report to the School Board. There are seven (7) members on the CBOC.

Currently the following spots are vacant on the CBOC, and BUSD seeks interested citizens to fill these spots:

  1. A member active in a senior citizen’s organization.
  2. A member active in a bona-fide taxpayers association.
  3. A member who is a parent or guardian of a child enrolled in BUSD.

In addition, to qualify for membership on the CBOC, the member must be at least 18 years old, must reside within BUSD, and is not a BUSD employee, not a BUSD official, not a BUSD vendor, not a BUSD contractor, or not a BUSD consultant.

The term of the CBOC membership is two (2) years, and no member may serve more than three consecutive terms. The CBOC is currently scheduled to meet quarterly. In order to be considered for the committee, an application must be completed and submitted to the BUSD Bond Director, Roxanne Egan at [email protected] or submitted to the BUSD District Office at 350 East K Street in Benicia. The BUSD Superintendent will review the applications and then bring a recommendation to the School Board for appointment to the CBOC. Applications may be picked up at the BUSD District Office at 350 East K Street, or from the BUSD web site Measure C page at, under Measure C Documents > Citizens’ Bond Oversight Committee Meeting Documents, at the bottom of the page.
