Dear Parents/Guardians and Staff,

This communication is to update you concerning BUSD’s response to the air quality situation. The safety and health of our students is our top priority, therefore, we have restricted outdoor activities due to the changing air quality. BUSD will be constantly checking air quality readings provided through AirNow.gov and following the Air Quality Index to ensure staff and student safety.

Schools will remain open today with measures being taken to reduce smoke exposure for staff and students. Childcare development units at elementary sites will also continue to remain open

Below you will find the Air Quality Index along with our current Air Quality plans for students and staff.

If PM2.5 air quality levels enter Hazardous or Very Unhealthy ranges 201 – 500

  • High and middle schools will shorten passing periods when possible in order to minimize student exposure to the air
  • After school sports will be canceled
  • PE classes will be held indoors
  • Schools will hold lunch and recess indoors
  • Doors and windows will be kept closed as much as possible

If PM2.5 air quality levels enter Unhealthy range tomorrow 151 – 200

  • Schools will minimize time outdoors for lunch and recess.
  • Indoor space will be provided for students who do not wish to go outside during break periods
  • Doors and windows will be kept closed as much as possible

Thank you for your cooperation and support as we deal with poor air quality. Our thoughts go out to our Fairfield, Napa, and Sonoma neighbors who are dealing with evacuations and tragedy.
