Dear BUSD Staff and Families,
I hope this communication finds you and your families well as we enter this season of Thanksgiving.
We know many of you have been eagerly awaiting communication regarding returning to In-Person Hybrid Learning. With that being said, we want to provide you with an update regarding the status of our current virtual learning model and the possibility of moving toward in-person instruction.
First off, the Board Trustees voted 3-2 last night to approve the implementation of in-person learning pending eligibility on the California State Government’s four-tiered system and approval of the Memorandum of Understanding with our Benicia Teachers Association (BTA,) to implement in-person hybrid learning. Until that happens, we will remain in virtual instruction at least through the winter break. Details regarding the hybrid learning model are listed in the links below.
As a reminder, eligibility for in-person instruction in a hybrid model requires that a county remain in the red tier for two weeks. Once we are eligible we will clearly articulate a return date to you with advanced notice so you and our amazing educators have time to plan.
In addition, pending approval of the Memorandum of Understanding with BTA, we will also be preparing to begin small group instruction after winter break for students who are in need of support and meet District identified criteria. Small group instruction is allowed when a county is in the purple tier.
Below you will find links to important documents highlighting plans for reopening:
- The link to the video of the 11.19.20 presentation to the Board on returning to in-person learning.
- The board presentation, Return to In-Person Hybrid Learning from November 19th board meeting that outlines the hybrid in-person models and schedules.
- A comprehensive Return to In-Person Hybrid Learning for Families which includes the in-person schedules, health and safety measures, as well as other important information.
- A Frequently Asked Questions document to answer any clarifying questions regarding returning to in-person hybrid learning.
The most important and critical part in the planning, preparation and being ready for our students, is a response from you about your plans for returning to in-person learning. We realize this may be a big decision for your family, so please take time to review the materials provided.
Please complete the linked commitment form in which you will indicate your intention for each of your children no later than Monday, December 7, 2020. We will not have the capacity or staffing to switch students between virtual and in-person models once your decision has been made.
Thank you for your understanding and partnership as we get set to welcome your children back to campus!
Sincerely,
Charles F. Young, Ed.D.
Superintendent
