Board of Education has selected
Dr. Damon J. Wright
as Superintendent Finalist

Benicia, California – The Benicia Unified School District (BUSD) Board of Trustees is pleased to announce the selection of Dr. Damon J. Wright as the finalist for the position of Superintendent. Following an extensive search process lasting over four months, the Board unanimously selected Dr. Wright as the finalist at the Special Closed Session Board Meeting on May 7, 2022, to replace retiring Superintendent Dr. Charles F. Young.
The approval process included a validation visit to Dr. Wright’s current district, Fairfield-Suisun Unified School District. There, Dr. Wright received glowing reviews from colleagues that included from Superintendent Kris Corey to the Executive Assistants, including certificated and classified staff members, union presidents for certificated and classified staff members, site administrators, and District Office Directors. Staff members used words to describe their experiences working with Dr. Wright: “personable, transparent, thoughtful, supportive, problem solver, organized, understanding and very professional.”
Dr. Wright is not new to the Benicia community, having served as a former Principal at Benicia High School where he formed strong relationships with the students, staff, and community. His distinguished career in education includes, currently serving as the Director of Human Resources for Fairfield Suisun Unified School District and Title IX Coordinator. As the Executive Director of Secondary Education and Principal of American Canyon High School, with the Napa Valley Unified School District. He also worked in San Ramon Valley Unified School District for nine years as Assistant Principal and School Psychologist, as well as San Diego Unified School District as a School Counselor.
Dr. Wright’s extensive education includes a Doctorate in Organizational Leadership from Brandman University, a Master’s of Science in School Counseling from National University and a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from California State University Sacramento.
Dr. Wright is an accomplished equity-driven leader who is committed in closing equity gaps, supporting social-emotional learning, and improving student achievement.
“We are pleased about welcoming Dr. Wright to our district. He will be a true asset to our school community,” stated Sheri Zada, Board President for the Benicia Unified School District.
Dr. Wright stated, “It is an honor to be selected to serve as Superintendent of Benicia Unified School District. It feels like I am coming home. I look forward to developing relationships and building trust with our students, staff, parents, and community partners once again, to implement the District’s vision in a transparent and collaborative manner.”
It is anticipated that the approval of Dr. Damon J. Wright’s appointment will occur on May 26, 2022, at a Regular Meeting of the Governing Board. Dr. Wright is scheduled to begin his role as Superintendent on July 1, 2022.
